From Year 6, Red House International School adopts the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Sao Paulo, a challenging program, geared toward students between 11 and 16 years of age, that encourages practical connections between school and the real world. With a large and traditional knowledge base, the MYP encourages students to be creative, critical and reflective.

Intercultural understanding, global engagement and communication skills are seen as essential elements for education in the 21 century, and are considered fundamentals to our philosophy. Within this context, the MYP promotes a integrative view of learning.

The program requires a teaching and learning approach that includes and extends the traditional school subjects. Based on the knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired in the PYP, the program prepares students to meet the academic challenges of the IB Diploma Programme in Year 11 and Year 12.

PROFILE OF THE STUDENTS

The years of Elementary School II are a stimulating period for students. That is when they become more independent learners and feel more accountable for the results that they are able to achieve.

At Red House, students receive the emotional, physical and social needed support for growing up and for academic progress from the beginning of their path to adulthood. In this time of transition in the lives of teenagers, the school promotes a integrative education, encouraging self-confidence, responsibility, respect and multicultural understanding through the values of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile.

PEDAGOGICAL STRUCTURE

From Year 6, students expand their repertoire and deepen the studies in areas of interest. It’s an opportunity to try out and build on their own personal trajectory chosen.

In the last two years (Years 8 and 9), the flexibility of the carefully elaborated disciplines allows students to meet the requirements of the Brazilian legislation as well as their personal learning goals.

CURRICULUM

The MYP programme comprises eight groups of disciplines that provide a comprehensive and balanced education for the early years of adolescence.

Language and literature

Portuguese and English language and literature develop skills in six areas: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, Viewing, and Presenting. Red House values languages as key elements for the development of critical thinking, essential to cultivating intercultural understanding.

Spanish Language

The purpose of Spanish lessons in the MYP is to enhance our communicative approach, but with greater emphasis on the skills of reading, writing, listening comprehension and oral expression. The goal is that at the end of Elementary School II, Red House students can understand the main ideas in everyday-topic texts; communicate orally in everyday situations; describe experiences, events and wishes, as well as justify their opinions.

Mathematics

The mathematics program for elementary school II presents three major challenges:

1- Keep young learners interest in the content;

2- Further develop the acquisition of mathematical knowledge acquired in earlier years;

3- Develop skills and experiences to help with their social and professional life.

History and geography

In History and Geography, students collect, describe and analyze data; test hypotheses and learn to interpret complex information. This approach with real examples, research and analysis is an essential aspect of this thematic group.

Science

Science as a school subject includes Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology and Earth Science, among other subjects. Sciences encourages students to investigate issues through research, observation and experimentation, working independently and collaboratively. The themes proposed, with the application of science in real contexts, enable students to self-reflect and to think of actions on the tensions and dependencies Between Science, Ethics, Culture, Economics, Politics, Technology and The Environment.

Art and Music

Art stimulates young people´s imagination, it challenges perceptions and develops creative and analytical skills. It also challenges and enriches personal identity and builds an awareness of aesthetics in a real-world context. Music is also part of the Red House International curriculum since it enhances the perception of musical elements, theory and notation, as well as choir ensemble and band formation. These opportunities allow students to have a full musical experience out of which they can enjoy works of pop, classical, ethnic and jazz music, as well as have them contemplate the possibility of a future career.

Physical Education

The course enables students to understand and appreciate the value of being physically active and develops the motivation to make healthy life choices. At Red House International we believe in a balanced curriculum that includes relevant content, such as physical and health-related knowledge; aesthetic movement, team and individual sports, that can develop respect, collaboration, and communication skills. Therefore, interpersonal relationships construction is deeply appreciated.
